The mild weather in the south west of
France has been attracting visitors for generations. The appeal is
the generous amount of sunshine through the winter, rainfall in the
spring which nourishes the verdant countryside, a warm summer with
long evenings and sublime weather stretching through the Autumn well
into November
The area avoids excessive heat in
summer benefiting from average temperatures in the low 20’s with
highs in the low 30’s. The winters are relatively short and mild,
pollution is negligible and the
air quality the best in Europe.
Between the Lot valley and the Pyrenees
lies Gascony, historically one of the most independent regions of France. The home
of d'Artagnan (of Three Musketeers' fame), this is a fertile area of gently undulating
and richly cultivated landscapes marked by fields of sunflowers, maize and vines,
and by charming village communities where present day passions run towards rugby
and Armagnac. Castles, fortified churches and, above, all, 'bastide' towns abound
in this historic frontier country, vivid reminders of the turbulent past when this
corner of France was disputed by the crowns of both England and France. |
